ITIL is a globally accepted Best Practice Framework for delivering IT services cost effectively and efficiently. It has 26 processes & 4 Functions that has been tested on different type of organizations-Small, Medium & large. Since Information Technology is very much part and parcel of any vertical, possessing certification in this framework can spiral ones career.

Certification on ITIL Foundation fetches 2 credits and is a pre-requisite to do other modules shown in this diagram.

Service Life Cycle (SLC) and Capability are the two intermediate streams. The SLC contains 5 core ITIL publications/modules  viz.,

  1. Service Strategy (SS)
  2. Service Design (SD)
  3. Service Transition (ST)
  4. Service Operations (SO)
  5. Continual Service Improvement (CSI)

The Intermediate Capability stream contains modules that are derived from the above 5 core publications viz.,

  1. Service Offerings & Agreement (SOA)
  2. Planning Protection & Optimization (PPO)
  3. Release Control & Validation (RCV)
  4. Operation Support & Analysis (OSA)

On successfully passing the examination of each module from SLC & Intermediate stream would fetch 3 & 4 credits respectively. Therefore if a participant is certified in all 5 modules in SLC stream, would have total credits of 5×3=15 + 2 (ITIL Foundation)=17 credits If a participant is certified through the Capability route, then the total credits would be 4×4=16+2 (ITIL Foundation).

A minimum of 17 credits is required pre-requisite to take up Managing Across Life Cycle (MALC). Successfully passing the MALC examination will fetch 5 more credits and then a certified ITIL Expert!!

The journey does not end being an ITIL Expert. To become an ITIL Master, one has to implement ITIL Framework in an organization and this will be vetted by a panel. ITIL Master is only awarded if the panel deems fit!

Well that’s the road  map to be an ITIL Master. It’s not necessary that one needs to stick to a particular stream. AXELOS- the owner of ITIL Best Practices recommends combination of both streams. The difference between SLC and Capability is discussed in the next topic…

Until next time….
