Resource and Capabilities are the enablers in a Process Model.

Resource are those that goes direct into Production viz., Financial Capital, Infrastructure, Application, Information & People. They are tangible. Raw data when processed becomes information. This can be executed by People under Resource who are mostly freshers and with less experience, competencies and skillsets. They are not required to analyse the information or managing other people.

So then how does people under Resource become people under Capabilities. There’s no short cut. It’s the experience of dealing with different stakeholders across the organization, the exposure to the processes & tools, the ability to meet deadlines on time, every time, the ability to analyse the information into knowledge and then take informed decisions, the ability to delegate tasks to people under resource are some of the instances that separates people under Capabilities with that of people under Resources.

Let us take two competitors  delivering, say, Telecom services. The elements that goes under Resource between the two companies could be the same. However what makes one organization have an edge over the other company is their matured Capabilities in terms of Organization, Management, Processes, Knowledge and all these are driven by People under Capabilities.

Resource and Capabilities together forms Service Assets which helps in Value Creation.

Will cover Process Model in my next article

Until next time

Cheers!
